15/10/2013 - Flu jabs 2013
We are about to start the flu vaccination campaign. Last year this practice had one of the highest uptakes of influenza vaccine in the region.
With your help and participation we wish to repeat this success. This year the Department of Health are rolling out a new campaign to immunise children for this as well. Unlike adults, the children’s vaccine comes in a nasal spray as opposed to an injection. Remember influenza is a killer infection. Each year at least 500 people in Scotland are hospitalised with this infection and many of them die.
We plan to run separate clinics for both adults and children.
Anyone who suffers from one of the listed health conditions, who is pregnant or who is 65 or over should get the vaccine.
· Poorly controlled Asthma
· Cystic fibrosis
· Chronic heart disease
· Chronic kidney failure
· Multiple sclerosis
· Liver problems (such as cirrhosis/hepatitis)
· HIV infection
If you have any of these conditions, even if you feel fit and healthy, flu can still seriously affect you. It’s worthwhile getting the vaccine to avoid unnecessary worry for you and those close to you.
If you are pregnant you are at greater risk of complications of flu. Having the vaccine now will will help you avoid catching the flu and protect your baby.
Anyone receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy should also be vaccinated.
Unpaid carers of any age including young carers are eligible for the flu vaccine.
All 2 and 3 year old children will be offered the vaccine through our practice (in the nasal spray format).
The clinics for this year are scheduled to be held in the Masonic Hall in Dumbarton on Wed 23rd and Thur 24th October 2013. You will receive an invitation letter from the practice for these clinics. Children will only be given the nasal spray here in the surgery, please call to book an appointment and for further details. Information can also be found on our website at www.levenside.co.uk
